Survey 89 - Accents And Employment

Survey 89a - "Would you consider hiding a heavy regional accent to improve your chances of securing a job?"

Although 57% answered NO to this question, still nearly half of the respondents said that they would hide a strong regional accent to secure a job.

Survey 89b - "Do you think having a strong regional accent is helpful in an interview situation?"

68% of people said that this would NOT be helpful in getting an interview, cementing the results from question 89a.

Survey 89c - "Do you think bosses discriminate against people with strong regional accents?"

And although 53% said NO to this question, that still leaves almost half of the respondents saying YES which means a lot of people actually feel that accents are a discrimatory issue.

Survey 89d - "Please click on the regional accent that you feel will be the most attractive to an employer"

What came up on top of the attractive list? "Home Counties" closely followed by "Scottish" and then "Birmingham" accents. The least attractive in this list was "Welsh" followed by the "Liverpool" accent. Surely, it will depend on what accent you have and where you are from as to what accent you like and dislike.

If you have ever been in a situation where you felt like you have been discrimated against due to your accent, please let us know your story.
